KELHAM ARTS AND HERITAGE TRAIL
Discover Kelham Island and Neepsend
BACKGROUND
Who created it and why?
The Kelham Island & Neepsend Community Alliance (KINCA) started this project in 2018 with the aim of reducing the amount of graffiti in the area. We started by tackling the street utility cabinets of which almost every one was covered in tags and graffiti. We didn’t believe that simply repainting them would be the solution as it would just provide a fresh canvas for the taggers. Instead, we wanted to be more creative and turn these into colourful pieces of artwork with the aim of reducing future tagging. After gaining permission from Virgin Media and Openreach to proceed, we started approaching local businesses to sponsor cabinets. We’re now pleased to have almost all the cabinets in the area painted which has helped to brighten the area and significantly reduce tagging. Learn more
